Sharese has been cut from a different cloth since birth. While she works for the federal government doing fairly boring work, she finds excitement in the exploration of self. She serves as the programs director for the Atlanta chapter of a national organization called the Association for the Improvement of Minorities, sings faithfully for her church New Life Church in Decatur, Georgia, and absolutely loves anything she considers to be creative.

I had been thinking about exploring my creative talents for such a long time and making sure to keep mental notes of the ideas God was giving me about things I wanted to create. That ranges from photographs, to sculptures, and even home décor items and concepts that I had images of inside my head that were pounding their way out through my busy schedule and intense lack of sleep.

One day a close friend of mine asked me to go to a thrift store with him to assist him with picking out some things for his new apartment, and I actually fell in love in the thrift store. No, not with my friend (I love him already) but with all the creative potential I could see in other peoples little pieces of discarded life. There was my dream, my vision, randomly scattered across this dusty and unorganized warehouse of a thrift store and I absolutely loved it!

I scoured through the aisles feeling sort of bad for not paying closer attention to my friend and his needs, but I felt like I could multitask and help him while totally helping myself. I kept thinking of my bank account and then looking to see the prices when I was repeatedly shocked over and over again as I thought “this is only $.99?” I felt foolish every time I had this epiphany, but it did not stop my mission.

Eventually, after two shopping days and about four, okay maybe six thrift stores, and a bit less than $100 later, operation creativity was complete. My friend got most of his items and my whole life seemed to change after this escapade. Through the process, I learned some things about good finds I would love to share so pay attention!
this could change your life.
Thrift Shopping Tips
  1. Do not pass on things that can be reborn if they are washed or easily fixed. Many times you will find dusty, old, broken, and dirty things that just need some love and care to make them like new.
  2. Allow your imagination to be free. Try to look at things in your own unique way. Maybe you see a table that looks pretty good but the paint is an odd color, but that is okay because I am sure a local retailer has the perfect color for you to repaint it with.
  3. Stay within your budget! Overspending can quickly turn a euphoric shopping experience into a painful nightmare if the lights get turned off so be mindful that those small dollar amounts add up quickly if you are careful.
  4. Do not leave something you want at the store unless you have paid for it and asked it to be held upon your return. Good things fly off the shelves in a matter of minutes; I have seen it happen!
  5. Test electronics before you purchase. They cannot be returned and have no warranty.
  6. Frequent your favorite stores. They usually receive shipments every day with all types of goodies!
  7. Try to go to the thrift stores located in more affluent neighborhoods. I have learned that wealthy people throw out the best things by donating them for a good tax write-off.
This is the home décor idea that came to life by thrifting and it cost less than $30. I purchased different shapes of glass that were generally meant for lamps or candle holders and set them inside my fireplace which I never use to build fires. I had some decorative balls lying around, so I threw those in there along with an actual candle holder. I like the glow of white candles so I made sure I had plenty of them in different sizes and warm scents and voila! A cold and unused fireplace quickly became my favorite view in my whole apartment.

This is another one of my imaginative creations that came to me when my mother gave me these four super cool placemats. I hot glued them together, stuck some coasters on them, glued on a hot pad, and a few other things I twisted into flower shapes. It is my second favorite view in my apartment, which I enhanced later with a hand design created with gold studs.

Since I started thrifting, I have come to realize how much of my personality and who God has called me to be is really in this talent. I consider myself to be a creator of things. God has given me the ability to create images physically from imagination and the thrift store has been a rich source of supplies and enriching material for my imagination to flow. I see what looks like an old beat up chair to a less imaginative person but God allows my eyes to see a vintage masterpiece. With a little love and a lot of vision, I am able to give life to a thing that was given away and counted as dead. I wash off the dust that settled from sitting in the store, tighten the screws to ensure the structure is sound, and then I add a little fabric to make sure the beauty I see in the chair is seen by everyone else who sees it.

This theme is an obviously divine one in that God’s will is the same for those who believe in Him. To give us glory, is for Him to receive it. Therefore, the Father designed us to be empty or dead much like my old dirty thrift store goods. Once counted off and given away as useless trash, God in His mercy and grace sees a masterpiece in us. A masterpiece He can use to add beauty to the room without anything more than love and vision. He washes away our sins that stained the fabric of our souls, gives us wisdom and all the fruits of His spirit to make us structurally sound, then gives us this beautiful light that everyone can see just by taking a look.

the Father designed us to be empty or dead much like my old dirty thrift store goods... [but] God in His mercy and grace sees a masterpiece in us

I encourage you readers to explore the things you enjoy, and share them with others. Do not count off the things you do well with the thought that it is just a hobby and not a true talent. Everything we have in us was given by God and is divine and can be used for a divine purpose. What better a premise to work from? If you acknowledge the fact that God is in you, then shouldn't His work be what comes out? So maybe you like the idea of thrifting and this is how you can manifest the glory of God on earth, or maybe it is in your sense of humor, or your ability to write or teach; use what God gave you to give life and light to the rest of the world as you know it.
with love,
Sharese

<![CDATA[Not just what I need]]>Fri, 03 May 2013 17:59:09 GMThttp://thelifeforless.com/2/post/2013/05/not-just-what-i-need.html
Girls, I have had an AWAKENING. I'm happy to report that as of Friday of last week, after over a YEAR of searching, saving and waiting for God to open a door, I am now driving a beautiful new/ new to me car! Woohoo! She is a beauty, i'm happy, i'm grateful, I needed a car. But here's the kicker, the reason why i'm stunned, the source of my awakening: it is EXACTLY what I wanted... and more.

So, okay Lord, you knew I needed a car. I am a good steward, I can be trusted, you provide for all my needs, I KNEW you would give me a car but Lord, you CARE about it being the white car that I wanted? about it having the tan leather interior that I wanted? You want to one up my desire for a sunroof and just take the whole roof off and give me a convertible instead?! Now you're just showing off...
Picture
yikes! convertible hair, what's a girl to do? #abundantlivingproblems
It's mind boggling to consider that God is interested in the details of my life, of our lives. That he not only met my need, but granted and surpassed my desires at the same time. It's so easy to file away your desires isn't it? As a minister or a mom, a friend, a business woman, a prayer warrior, a sister or a church usher; you grow accustomed to caring for the needs and wants of others and yours easily get pushed to the side.
With all of the worlds problems, with all of the people who are without, who am I to dare give the Lord specifics of what I want! Right? I mean, Lord I would really love it if the car was white. I would be beside myself if it had tan leather interior and I would just be over the moon if it had a sunroof... But I understand if it doesn't. Really, I'll be grateful for a car that moves... Right? No. Well, yes and no.

Yes, we are grateful to have whatever the Lord supplies us. We know that God in his infinite wisdom knows what is the best for us and that we, on our BEST "most Holy" day are like filthy rags to God Isaiah 64:6 (please click on links to access the referenced scriptures). So we trust him alone to give us what HE thinks is the best. But we are also human! Uniquely designed humans whom God formed and knows intimately Luke 12:7. He thinks about us, his creation Psalm 139:17-18 and takes delight in us Psalm 149:4. God is aware of the desires that we (his creation) have, and our loving father is pleased to see us happy when we get them.
Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun.

Psalm 37:4-6 NIV

Father THANK YOU for your loving care. Thank you for your individual attention towards us Lord. Thank you for being concerned with the details of our lives and for desiring to see your children happy. We are grateful today Lord that in your sovereignty and just in your sheer BIG-ness, you are able to heal the sick, feed the hungry, clothe the naked AND care about the details of our lives. We are grateful to you God, you are immense and we are small and we are grateful that you busy yourself with our trivial concerns. Help us to always remember your love Lord. Awaken in your sons and daughters a fresh wave of overwhelming love and care. Be magnified by the worship that comes from our lives and our lips. Deposit in our hearts your plan for us and mold our desires so that they become yours. Help us to not feel forgotten. Lord may you always receive the glory from our lives that is due unto you alone. In Jesus name, Amen.

Lord, you have examined my heart
    and know everything about me.
You know when I sit down or stand up.
    You know my thoughts

even when I’m far away.
You see me when I travel
and when I rest at home.
    You know everything I do.
You know what I am going to say
even before I say it, Lord.
You go before me and follow me.
You place your hand of blessing on my head.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
too great for me to understand!

Psalm 139:1-6 NLT

Man, I've missed you girls! I have been up to my elbows in dust, plaster, pipes, screws and water lines for the last 3 WEEKS. I'm happy to report that my bathroom remodel is COMPLETE! I cannot express in words how happy I am to be finished. I brushed my teeth for about 6 minutes today in this sink :)

I have no broken bones, just a few bruises and only a minor case of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder; nothing that a little prayer and a manicure wont fix.

                                         ::sigh:: isn't she lovely?

So, here's the unveiling dolls [insert applause here]. Thank you, thank you, you're far too kind! Please, be seated. First, I'd like to thank God who is the head of my life, I'd like to thank my friends at Home Depot- without whom none of this would have been possible. I'd like to give a particular shout out to Ramon in plumbing aisle 14 for holding me down when times got tough. I'd like to thank YouTube for that false sense of security :/ Lastly, I want to thank my mom, my friends and family for your encouragement, cheering and support and the enthusiastic readers of The Life for Less. Uh... Amen!

<![CDATA[Tam the handyman... ]]>Fri, 12 Apr 2013 18:20:30 GMThttp://thelifeforless.com/2/post/2013/04/tam-the-handyman.html
SOOOooo... In an overwhelming fit of DIY confidence and blurred by the wistful dreams of a renovated bathroom, I accidentally ripped out my entire sink and vanity...
Picture
Super confident... before I got started :/
Don't panic, I have everything under control. 1 WEEK later and albeit more sore than I've EVER been in my life, I've made some significant head way! I've made some great new friends at Home Depot, where I go at least once a day for a shoulder to cry on and a new tool that I thought I "didn't need". All in all, I'm still feeling pretty good about this! I think. I mean, at this point there is no turning back. Here's my progress:

Did I DO this?
I mean,

with my own HANDS?!
Girls, you can do A N Y T H I N G you put your mind to!
Surely, I knew heading into this that I had a modicum of creativity and confidence, but never in a MILLION years did I think I was going to have to, let alone be able to insulate my wall and lay down sheet rock! I mean, who DOES that?!

We so often allow fear to dictate what we can and cannot do. It may not be a DIY project, for you it may be going back to school or traveling outside of the country. Whatever it is, be encouraged to cast down fear and apprehension! GOD tells you what you are in His word. He is clear and His word- not your fear- is the final authority.
  • You are more than a conqueror (Romans 8:37)
  • You can do all things through Christ (Phil 4:13)
  • You are an overcomer (1 John 5:4)
Hallelujah! What GREAT news. I'll keep you posted on my project doll, will you keep me posted on yours? Talk to you soon!

<![CDATA[Don't let me be put to shame!]]>Thu, 04 Apr 2013 18:50:57 GMThttp://thelifeforless.com/2/post/2013/04/dont-let-me-be-put-to-shame.htmlIt's so amazing how David's Old Testament cries in Psalm 25 mirror the very ones that I, that we say to God today. When God lights a fire in us to proclaim His name and to do his work- he tells us that he will be with us and we naturally expect that to look like something. "Don't let me be put to shame, Lord!" We cry, as though God would ever, could ever do such a thing. But isn't that how it looks? He's given YOU this responsibility after all, given you this important assignment, he chose YOU and you just followed him! You followed him onto the ledge and now things are unraveling and you're hanging out here looking absolutely crazy. What does it mean when God says he is with us? What does it mean when he says that he will provide? The greatest thing that we can ever do as believers is to learn to trust in the character of God and take him for his word.
It's difficult for us not to attach our perceptions and our experiences to the word that God gives us. It's difficult not to do that, but learning this is critical to the health of our relationship with Christ. Our expectation must be in the character of God alone, not in the manifestation of his promises. Who are we to determine what provision looks like? Consider Mary, who was impregnated as a virgin. She was given a very important job from the Lord, wouldn't you say? Even using the word "important" to describe the responsibility of carrying the Messiah in your womb is comical and completely insufficient... and we think so haughtily of our assignments, we are so proud of our respective calls to ministry, so superior. I digress, that is another post altogether...

Our expectation must be in the character of God alone, not in the manifestation of his promises.

How did Mary imagine that she would give birth to Jesus? Did she think it would be miraculously pain free? I probably would have expected that. Did she think there would be an out of body experience? That the baby would come out holding the scrolls or resembling her image of what God looked like? I probably would have expected that. Did she think that God would have made it easy for she and Joseph during her pregnancy? Giving them an abundance of food and clothing and a stable place to call home? Did she think there would be a ROOM IN THE DARN INN for her to lay down in while she labored?! I DEFINITELY would have at least expected that...
I mean, come on Lord, in this barn with these animals? really? just right here on this dusty floor in this barn? And yet, we know that God provides. We know that his character, his very essence, who he is is Provider, Jehovah Jireh (Yahweh- yireh) the Lord who provides. That IS who God is. Who are we to say what that looks like?

So how do we stay the course? Lord help us to be willing vessels. Use the experiences that we are currently encountering as a tool to increase our faith. Help us to wring these experiences dry and do not allow a drop of the lesson to stay behind. Give us a portion of your grace and mercy that will sustain us during these times. Imanu'el, You are with us, and we thank you. We are grateful that you have not and will not ever leave us in this thing alone. You will finish the work that you started. Develop our gratitude and align our expectations with your will.
Psalm 25
The Message

I offer my life to you, Lord. My God, I trust you. Please don’t let me be put to shame! Don’t let my enemies rejoice over me! For that matter, don’t let anyone who hopes in you be put to shame; instead, let those who are treacherous without excuse be put to shame.

Make your ways known to me, Lord; teach me your paths. Lead me in your truth—teach it to me— because you are the God who saves me. I put my hope in you all day long. Lord, remember your compassion and faithful love— they are forever! But don’t remember the sins of my youth or my wrongdoing. Remember me only according to your faithful love for the sake of your goodness, Lord. The Lord is good and does the right thing; he teaches sinners which way they should go. God guides the weak to justice, teaching them his way. All the Lord’s paths are loving and faithful for those who keep his covenant and laws. Please, for the sake of your good name, Lord, forgive my sins, which are many!

Where are the ones who honor the Lord? God will teach them which path to take. They will live a good life, and their descendants will possess the land. The Lord counsels those who honor him; he makes his covenant known to them. My eyes are always looking to the Lord because he will free my feet from the net. Turn to me, God, and have mercy on me because I’m alone and suffering. My heart’s troubles keep getting bigger— set me free from my distress! Look at my suffering and trouble— forgive all my sins! Look at how many enemies I have and how violently they hate me! Please protect my life! Deliver me! Don’t let me be put to shame because I take refuge in you. Let integrity and virtue guard me because I hope in you. Please God, save Israel [save your people]* from all its troubles!

" Don’t let me be put to shame because I take refuge in you. Let integrity and virtue guard me because I hope in you."

Originally posted on Andy's blog in February, I'm choosing to share this with you now here and hope that it touches you as much as it did me.
This Resurrection season forces me to think on the pre-eminent, providential plan of God.
I am grateful that the orchestration of Jesus' life, death and Resurrection stands as a reminder to me that
I am not forgotten, even when the storms are raging
Enjoy your Resurrection Holiday friends.
W h e n S t o r m s a r e R a g i n g
We all face days of adversity,
Moments of hostility,
Nights of weeping, uncertainty, regret.
But sometimes those days extend into weeks,
The moments into seasons,
The nights into a relentless deluge with no break in sight.
We all carry a plan for that rainy day,
But what do you do when the storms are raging?

When storms are raging, the things that normally give life –
Like those gentle April showers –
Become taunting sheets of soaking grief or pain
That never seem to understand when enough is enough.

When storms are raging, those politely differing points of view -
Like distant rumbles of moody thunder –
Become bewildering claps of frightening rage or rejection
That leave you wondering if you can ever please anybody.

When storms are raging, simple sadness or quiet regrets –
Like fleeting streaks of faraway lightning –
Become life-altering strikes of searing loss or failure
That leave you feeling permanently alone and ashamed.

When storms are raging, little uncertainties or modest changes –
Like whispering breezes in Southern pines –
Become paralyzing gales of violent terror or disruption
That leave you grasping for anything that’s rooted in certainty.

But…
When storms are raging your feelings can be lairs
And your “facts” can hide the TRUTH.
See, I’ve met the Wave Dancer, the ultimate Storm Chaser
And I’ve read the red letters – you should, too.

The world has yet to see the storm
That can chill the warmth of His kindness
Or weaken the strength of His embrace.
The world has yet to see the flood
That can undry the tears He’s dried
Or unhold the hearts He’s held.
And whether you can feel it or not,
He wants you to know He loves you.

The world has yet to see the storm
That can uproot Him from His faithfulness
Or punish you for choosing to trust Him.
The world has yet to see the storm
That can scar you more deeply than the wounds He took
Or break you any more than the griefs He carried.
And whether you can feel it or not,
He wants you to know He loves you.

The world has yet to see the storm
That can hurl more regrets than He can cover with grace
Or unleash more change than He can meet with peace.
The world has yet to see the storm
That can blast you more than His ability to bless you
Or outlast the lengths He would go to show you…
That whether you can feel it or not,
He wants you to know He loves you.

God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.
1 Corinthians 12: 6-7

In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you. If your gift is serving others, serve them well. If you are a teacher, teach well. If your gift is to encourage others, be encouraging. If it is giving, give generously. If God has given you leadership ability, take the responsibility seriously. And if you have a gift for showing kindness to others, do it gladly.

Be earnest and unwearied and steadfast in your payer (life), being (both) alert and intent in (your praying) with thanksgiving. - Colossians 4:2
If you were as lucky as I was growing up, you had a wonderful woman of God in your life, a mentor, a teacher or someone who cared about your life with Christ.

I was so blessed to have my Grandmother show me the way. Not by preaching to me from my childhood until her passing in 1993 but she was someone who LIVED the Life. She lived the life from the 60’s until her death. She was a mighty woman of God. I remember her big black bible and she would have that book in her arms stomping through the house in prayer. She woke up praying to God and go to bed yelling at the devil. All of hell shook when her feet touched the floor. It is hard to find women like that these days.
Picture
One of my youngest memories is her homemade chicken and dumplings. They were the BEST. As my husband would say, “they were off the chain.” She made them and southern sweet tea and you had to sit all day and smell it cooking. Then the moment came when you are called to the table. We all sit down and in an instant, the phone would ring. All of us children would look at each other because we knew…..we knew it could be THAT call. The prayer chain was in full swing. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s a lost art that does not occur much anymore but as a child who is on the verge of starvation, you knew, this was going to be a VERY LONG phone call. Everything stopped until Grandma finished with her call, her prayer and her time with God. If ever there is a time for prayer chains it is now.

We have recently moved to Denver, Colorado and although the landscape reflects the finger prints of God with its breathtaking views, the enemy also has his finger print on the city with drug and sex trafficking, gangs and homelessness. This is where God wanted us to do His work. By Devine appointment we met with Pastor Isaac Olivarez who heads up Urban Outreach of Denver. They minister to an area in the city called “the 5 points neighborhood.” It is an area ravished by drugs, gang life and sex trafficking. This is where our heart is and God brought us together to not just bring people to Christ in the neighborhood, but to help build them up to be ministers, evangelists and maybe even missionaries for God.

What is touching my heart about this neighborhood is the abundant amount of single mother’s. Some are homeless, some are addicted to drugs and some are involved in prostitution. My heart is to show them Christ so the single mother’s will know they are not single at all. Once we connect with them, they will know that they are connected with something greater. That greatness is our Lord Jesus Christ.

On September29, 2013 we are launching City Life Church in this neighborhood and we need all your prayers as we get closer to the launch date.

I am writing this to start my modern day prayer chain and I am calling you, asking you to join us in prayer for this great city and our new church. The city of Denver needs your prayers. There is an estimated 22,000 people for every one church. We need your prayers as we head out and try to help those in need. Please pray for wisdom, discernment and safety for us and pray that God softens the heart of the people of Denver as we try and show them the love of God. Your phone is ringing… will you answer?

I invite you to take a look at our website www.lovedenver.org for more information.

<![CDATA[JOY; work smart, not hard.]]>Fri, 22 Mar 2013 17:10:43 GMThttp://thelifeforless.com/2/post/2013/03/joy-work-smart-not-hard.htmlHi friends! It should come as no surprise that the lessons I've been receiving on Joy have been put into their FULL use over the last couple of weeks. Isn't that always how God seems to work? Providing you the answer before you even have the question... God's providence at work.
Prov·i·dence [prov-i-duhns] noun:
  • the foreseeing care and guidance of God over the creatures of the earth.
  • God, especially when conceived as omniscient, directing the universe and the affairs of humankind with wise benevolence.
  • a manifestation of divine care or direction.
A few weeks ago, I spoke to a friend of mine who was talking about divine friendships and used a Scrabble game as an illustration. She used the image of the places that words intersect on the game board as the Lords divine connections in our lives. Some words on the board will give you the opportunity to arrange your tiles around it into a word that gives you 50 points! That is a home-run divine connection if ever there was one. Some will give you just a few points and still some will make you pass your turn.

This same imagery can be used to talk about the difference between Joy and Happiness and the pay off for each one.
We attribute so much credit to happiness. We desire it, we seek it at all costs, we feel a right to have it and we're angry when we don't. Happiness, we feel is just a human right and we are willing to go out of our way to get to it.

In the game of Scrabble, players are given 7 random tiles at a time in order to make up words on the home board. (If you don't know how to play Scrabble, 1- shame on you 2- check out the rules here so that you can follow along.)
Each letter is worth a different amount of points, so making words is all about strategy. One would think that in order to get the most points you would want to make longer words, but a well thought out short word will often yield you a better result. Let's take the following words as examples:
J O Y
  • worth 13 points in Scrabble
  • 3 letter word
  • letter J, a unique tile- only 1 per game
  • tiles can create 3 other unique words
H A P P I N E S S
  • worth 16 points in Scrabble
  • 9 letter word
  • common letters which all have multiples
  • tiles can create 244 other unique words
Making a 9 letter word like Happiness requires you to skip turns and hold on to your tiles, building a stock pile until the opportune time for you to play. Making a 3 letter word like Joy gets rid of the tiles that you currently have and leaves you with tiles to spare. Waiting to create a long word like Happiness means that you have skipped over 244 opportunities to make a different word. Creating a word like Joy requires only 3 of your tiles and allows you to pull new letters, giving you access to new words. Happiness can be made many times, as all of the letters have many multiples. Joy is a unique word that can only be made once, as there is only one J in every game.

Do you follow?

SEEK JOY!!! Joy is the constant that opens up the doors for you to make new words; to make Peace, to make Patience, to make Endurance. Joy seems insignificant, but it's value is worth far more than it seems. Though it looks like happiness is worth more, the value of Joy exceeds it in abundance! Happiness is fleeting, it comes and it goes. Don't wait for happiness when you have access to Joy right now! There is only one Joy, only one Jesus and He left that to you by the power of the Holy Spirit according to Galatians 5:22. It's yours for the taking.
Play your hand and move on to the next word.

Have a great weekend friends!
