TIP for Travel: Don't hop
There are tons of terrific travel websites that make finding cheap flights a synch. Whether comparing flights from different airlines on Kayak or negotiating prices on Orbitz, securing an economical seat is painless. However, the absolute BEST tip we have for you when it comes to budget travel? Be a repeat customer.
Choose a trustworthy discounted airline (like Airtran (now Southwest) or Jetblue) and sign up for their free rewards club. Not only will you begin to accumulate credits for flying that can be cashed in for free flights and upgrades, but you will be abreast of sales and special promotions as they come up. We scored our tickets to NYC for $89 because we were “in the know” of a 72 hour special promotion.
What makes this trip more unique than any other we’ve had to a city we know so well? It’s NYC Restaurant Week! Plan your travel around a non-holiday event that makes your destination special. Plans to head to New Orleans for Mardi gras may not yield inexpensive flights or accommodations but surely the less publicized Creole Gumbo Festival (which takes place each winter) offers a less expensive, less crowded and much more delicious alternative. Search for free concerts, "Taste Of" festivals, street fairs and events that highlight what your host city is known for.
